Intense saxophone-driven free jazz drum ‘n’ bass
When you choose to set yourself up in front of a freight-train of a rhythm section – consisting of four of Europe’s premier freejazzists – then yes, you want to be sure that you pack a punch on the horn. Doing just this is no problem for Mette Rasmussen. The Trondheim-based Dane is continually compared with the legendary Albert Ayler, and the same energy and intensity is present in everything she does, whether on her own, with Fire! Orchestra, or with Trondheim Jazzorkester.
Mette Rasmussen is one of the biggest talents in Scandinavian jazz right now. When the quintet played during Copenhagen Jazz Festival last year, Berlingske Tidende elated: “If some might think that the free jazz is an impoverished chapter, then it should be equally concluded that the beleaguered style does not lack new blood, audience or enthusiasm.”
