Ches Smith, Craig Taborn & Mat Maneri

When pianist Craig Taborn and violinist Mat Maneri — two thirds of drummer Ches Smith’s new-ish trio — play together, sounds straight out of Second Viennese School chamber works, by Arnold Schoenberg or Alban Berg, surface; and when Smith enters, with cymbal or tom accents or a steady groove, the trio flits with wayward post-bop, black metal, minimalism and hyper-rational, time-shifting, Elliot Carter-type fare.
