Groovy, urban jazz from David Bowie’s Blackstar-collaborator

When David Bowie suddenly and completely unexpectedly came to an end with the requiem Blackstar, it caused everyone to begin talking about saxophonist Donny McCaslin. But by this time McCaslin had already been a well-established and highly respected musician for over twenty years, and with no less than three Grammy nominations under his belt.

McCaslin writes energetic and melody rich sounds that nod gently to the rock he listened to as a young man. Keyboardist Jason Lindner is probably the one who most often drives the quartet into something that might be called a post-rock landscape, but for the most part the boss steers the ship with a steady hand back to jazz.
