Poland’s grandmaster of jazz
Like one of his early idols, Miles Davis, Tomasz Stanko has a particular genius for putting together great bands, and with this New York quartet, he has hit the jackpot yet again! 75-year-old Stanko has always had a transatlantic career, but a few years ago he went all the way and moved to New York. Here, it did not take long before he had gathered together a team of young but seasoned musicians, and in 2013 the album Wislawa came out to much attention in the jazz press.
In this setting, Stanko easily finds a melancholic tone and European style sharpened in classic American energy and dynamism. The installment that comes to Victoria consists of Alexi Tuomarila from Stanko’s Dark Eyes quintet and Reuben Rogers, who we know from Joshua Redman’s trio. Strong names that only add to our anticipation!
