The Thing is proof that free jazz is more rock ‘n roll than rock itself. The Norwegian-Swedish power house has blown over audiences since the turn of the millennium. They have collaborated with Thurston Moore and Cato Salsa Experience, they have released a bunch of disks, and they have shown us that Neneh Cherry is far more than 7 seconds. The Thing consists of the cream of jazz talent and hardly needs introduction: Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love are Norway’s heaviest rhythm section, and in front is saxophonist Mats Gustafsson with the most dangerous saxophone around. There should have been carrying permit on this saxophone.
